Have you felt like you are going no where in your drumming?
Playing the same thing over and over again, and you literally feel like whacking the drums so hard thinking you'll get it after that?
Well, here are two things to remember:
Identify & Isolate
1) Identify
Find the part where you are struggling with. It may be a certain part in a bar, or a certain beat or a certain drum fill or combination. Take that part out and spend the next 10mins just working specifically on it.
2) Isolate
After identifying, you need to allow your hands and feet to physically go through the part AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN.... we are humans and our body parts have the same muscle memory. By doing this, you will be building the muscle memory in your limbs and in no time, it'll magically just stay there.
Finally, after doing this for about 10 mins, play the whole beat again, or the whole fill again, or try to apply what you are playing to a song or groove.
These two elements have been with me and helped me to achieve faster results in shorter time. Each time I come across a difficult part, I will first IDENTIFY where i'm lacking, and then ISOLATE it out and work on it.
Sometimes, you may not know how to isolate and practise...etc
That is where your drum teacher will help you. It's good to ask questions during class time.
Like what Tony Royster says "If you wanna get hooked, get hooked on drums"
Have fun!
